Why the Water Meter Is Your Most Reliable Leak Indicator
Every home connected to a municipal water supply has a meter that tracks total water flow. That meter runs 24 hours a day — and it records movement from every source, including leaks. A toilet that runs slowly overnight, a slab supply line leaking at 80 gallons per day, a pinhole in a wall cavity: all of them show up on the meter if you know how to look.
The meter test bypasses every guessing game. You don't need to know where the leak is, what pipe it's on, or how long it's been running. You just need 30 minutes and the ability to find your meter box. If it moves with all water off, a leak exists. If it stays still, the usage increase has another explanation. That binary result is more useful than any amount of visual inspection.
Step 1: Locate Your Water Meter
The meter is almost always at the curb or sidewalk edge, inside a plastic or concrete box at ground level. The lid will be marked 'Water Meter' or simply 'Water.' In some older neighborhoods, meters are mounted on the exterior wall of the home near the main shutoff. Use a flat screwdriver or a meter key (available at hardware stores) to open the lid. Watch for insects inside — spider and wasp nests are common.
Once the lid is open, you'll see the meter face. Most residential meters have a series of rotating dials showing total gallons or cubic feet used since installation, plus a low-flow indicator — typically a small triangle, star, or dial that moves with any water movement through the meter, even at very low flow rates.
Step 2: Shut Off Every Water Source
Before reading the meter, shut off every source of water in and around the home. This means: all faucets fully closed, toilets not recently flushed (let them refill completely), dishwasher and washing machine off, ice maker water supply line off or the ice maker cycle complete, and all irrigation zones off.
If your home has a whole-house humidifier, shut that off too. Any device that draws water automatically — without you turning a tap — can mask a leak or produce a false positive. Give every automatic device 5 minutes to complete any fill cycle before proceeding.
- Toilets — Flush once, then wait 3 minutes for the tank to completely fill before starting the test. A toilet that runs after filling will create a false positive.
- Irrigation — Turn the controller to OFF, not just past the last scheduled time. Some controllers have a manual run that activates automatically.
- Ice makers — Turn off the supply valve behind the refrigerator or set the ice maker to the off position — the fill cycle is automatic and intermittent.
- Water softeners — Postpone any scheduled regeneration cycle, which uses 40-60 gallons and will create a significant meter movement.
A single forgotten water source will produce a false positive. If the meter moves and you're uncertain, identify and shut off each device systematically before concluding a leak is present.
Step 3: Read and Wait
With all water off, photograph or note the exact meter reading — record all digits shown on the main dials or display. Then check the leak indicator: if it's moving with everything off, an active leak is almost certain. If it's still, a very slow leak may still be present but isn't detectable in real time.
Wait 15 to 30 minutes without using any water. At the end of the wait, re-read the meter. If the number has changed — even slightly — an active leak exists between the meter and the end of your plumbing system. The difference in reading tells you approximately how much water leaked during the test period, which gives you a rough flow rate.
Interpreting the Results
If your meter uses cubic feet, multiply the cubic feet moved by 7.48 to convert to gallons. For example: 0.05 cubic feet in 30 minutes = 0.37 gallons in 30 minutes = 0.74 gallons per hour = about 18 gallons per day. That's a small leak — likely a slow toilet or pinhole drip.
A movement of 1 cubic foot in 30 minutes = 7.48 gallons in 30 minutes = nearly 15 gallons per hour = 360 gallons per day. That's an emergency-level leak — a burst supply line, a major slab failure, or a service line break. Call a specialist immediately.
If the meter shows no movement, your usage increase has another explanation — rate changes, billing cycle issues, or a recently added usage source. But if the meter moved, the next step is professional detection to locate the source without guesswork.
